Smarter Demos: The Smart Shopping Cart

SmarterCX presents the Smarter Demos series, a 2-minutes-or-less look at some of the most innovative CX technologies and how they work.

With lots of everyday devices going smart in recent years, why not add the shopping cart to the list? In this 8th video on the Smarter Demos series, we take a look at some of the latest in omnichannel retail technology.

While on location at NRF 2019: Retail’s Big Show in New York City from January 13-15, the SmarterCX team met with Ahmed Beshry, Co-Founder and CPO of Caper, who showed us what he refers to as the “Amazon Go” of shopping carts. Add an item to the smart shopping cart, and it adds the item to a running list on the cart’s screen, as well as provides insight on item location throughout the store, shows deals available, and more.

SmarterCX: I’m here at NRF with Ahmed from Caper who has something cool here; can you show us what it is?

Ahmed Beshry: This is Caper and it’s our smart shopping cart. The idea is that you’d walk into a grocery store, grab one of these Caper smart shopping carts, and it’s really going to help you from the very beginning of when you get into the store to when you leave. It’s kind of like an Amazon Go compacted, and all of those components and features are compacted into a shopping cart.

So if I show you here, if you walked into a store, you’d grab one of our shopping carts and you simply throw the item inside the shopping cart. What you’re going to see on the screen here is that it’s going to identify that I added those Lay’s chips, and it’s going to add it to the screen. On top of that, while you’re walking around the store and shopping, you could search by where item locations are, you could shop by recipe, you can see what the nearby deals are, and a lot of other interactive components that help the shoppers as they’re shopping.

Going into a store and being able to add items to your cart, checkout directly on your cart, and leave the store is something I think that’s kind of hot. So I think that’s something that we’re going to see a lot of in 2019.
