Smarter Demos: Introducing A New Way to Self-Checkout

In this 7th video on the Smarter Demos series, we take a look at some of the latest in omnichannel retail technology. While on location at NRF 2019: Retail’s Big Show in New York City from January 13-15, the SmarterCX team met with Scott Scherler, Master Principal Sales Consultant, who gave us a brief demo of the self-checkout kiosk.

Self-checkout is a common staple in the retail environment. But many retailers run self-checkout kiosks as a separate project from the rest of the business. Newly released at NRF 2019, we take a look at Oracle‘s latest self-checkout solution which is run on the same code base as other device types in a given store.

SmarterCX: I’m here with Scott from Oracle, and Scott is showing me a self-checkout solution, but it’s especially exciting because this is newly released at this show. Scott, can you tell me about it?

Scott Scherler: It’s really awesome. The first thing I’m prompted to is my item entry area, and I’ve just got a bar code here that we’ll scan. It pulls the item in and I have a picture, just as a customer, that I can confirm what I scanned is actually the product that I’m taking.

Then at this point, if I wanted to finish, I can just finish and pay. We’re going to select credit card, so I have the ability to take my card and insert it. It’s going to go through and process that credit transaction. Once it’s authorized, I have the ability to email a copy to myself or I can print. We’ll go ahead and print, and I now have a receipt that is the exact same receipt that you would get if you checked out at the full service workstation.

So a single code base is running multiple device types in a single store. Many of our retailers have ventured and looked at self-checkout always as a separate project. This now can be done just as part of a standard implementation.
